Part Time School Crossing Guard – Police Department

Hourly Wage – $13.44 an hour

Hours: 7:00am-8:30am and 1:30pm-3:00pm

Closing Date: Open until filled
Job Description: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Perform all duties as assigned and subject to the direction of the Chief of Police.

Ensure that students use proper crossing locations and that no children are in the roadway while traffic is moving. If crossing signals are present, the crossing guard will use them to assist in the crossing.
Disrupt traffic only to allow children to cross the roadway using gaps in traffic.
Work with school officials and the shift supervisor in order to provide safe and orderly movement of children.
Ensure visibility and presence to motor vehicles and positions himself/herself on the sidewalk nearest to approaching children or near the curb on the side of the roadway if a sidewalk is not available.
Note any hazardous traffic offenses by accurately describing the vehicle and driver, or obtaining the license tag number. Such violations would consist of failure to obey the crossing guard’s signals or speeding.
Utilize Safety equipment when on duty.
Preforms other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications

High School Diploma is required
Candidates for a school crossing guard position will be evaluated for the following: Average intelligence; Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles; Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement; Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously; Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury.

Mental alertness; Neat appearance; Good character; Dependability; and an overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
Passing a physical examination and a criminal background check will be conditions for employment as a School Crossing Guard.
